The Gibson Super 400

The Gibson Super 400 hit the market in 1934. The 400 in the name was the $400 price tag. That was over $9000 at the time if you factor inflation.

If you are trying to date one, pre-1939 had a hand-engraved finger rest, a truss rod cover that said “L5 Super” that was changed to Super 400 after 1939. It was the biggest Gibson guitar at the time, but after 1939, it got bigger. The f-holes got bigger and a cutaway was added to the shape.

They are still being made today with variations.

Elvis fans fell back in love in the ’68 Comeback Special.

That 1963 Gibson Super 400 has been viewed millions of times.

Bill Haley played a beautiful Gibson Super 400.

The world Rocked Around The Clock with that one.

The Gibson Super 400 has always been Brian Setzer’s go-to guitar.

The Stray Cat knew how to strut.

I got to hold a truly beautiful custom one at the KC Guitar Show.

It was bargain priced at $13,000.

I love guitar shows!
